Justin Johnson

for MSU Board of Trustees

TEST

My name is Justin Johnson and I’m running for MSU Board of Trustees.

I decided to run after listening to the Impact Statements from survivors. I was saddened that my school had failed so miserably to protect students and visitors to campus; I was angered that the administration was compounding the tragedy by taking an adversarial approach to survivors. I’m running because I believe Justice is a process and the people who choose to put their hands to the process of Justice to nurture it and advance it, do so with the understanding that there is no shortcut to Justice. I pledge to use my position to fight for Justice alongside students, faculty, Michiganders, survivors, and their families. I consider all those who join us in the mission to foster a culture of Justice at Michigan State, regardless of their alma mater, true Spartan warriors.

Proposal: The Trustee Justice Committee

On my first day as Trustee, I will submit a proposal to the bylaws of the school and create the Trustee Justice Committee. As we’ve seen, the Board of Trustees is too detached from the every realities of the school’s efforts to prevent and respond to sexual assault. Prior to the consent decree with the Department of Education in 2015, it is unclear what the trustees knew individually and collectively. The Trustee Justice Committee should give the board a month-by-month overview of the entire scope of the campus response to sexual assault.

While chaired by a member of the board, the most important seats shall be filled by representatives of the various units around the campus that work as the tip of the spear in our attempt to reduce the number of assaults, and improve the handling thereof. The committee shall reserve seats for representatives of the student and faculty bodies. The most essential seat shall be reserved for the representative of an external Survivors’ Advocacy Group. This will ensure transparency and accountability.

Proposal: A New President

Since his appointment as Interim President, John Engler has continued to embarrass the university with crises of his own making. He has needlessly battled with the media, sought to blame the actions of survivors for future tuition costs, engaged in childish spats with the media and state politicians, and most astoundingly, attempted to bully survivors into taking quick cash settlements. He is literally exacerbating the financial liability of the school with his constant PR gaffes; he should be fired immediately.

I have enthusiastically endorsed amending the bylaws to give student and faculty groups greater say in the process for finding a selecting a new president. The president should have the vision to act as a good and reputable steward of the school. An education background is not a requirement, but the next president should have the soul of an educator: patient, understanding, and eager to bring out the best of the students at Michigan State University.

Proposal: Campus Office Hours

Trustees should not hide from campus life in the administration building and arena suites. Trustees should engage, not retreat from the vibrant community of students, staff, and faculty. I will make myself available on a monthly basis to students and faculty. I will encourage my fellow trustees to do the same. We are public servants; we must make ourselves available to our constituents!

Oooh Oooh! I know what to do to solve this problem. Side effects may include a reduction in rape culture, racism, and a culture of abuse and hazing. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/coronavirus-is-spreading-in-fraternity-houses-raising-concerns-for-campuses-opening-this-fall/2020/07/10/72c986c0-c2f0-11ea-9fdd-b7ac6b051dc8_story.html

Trump never misses a chance to punish immigrants, regardless of status. This is terrible policy and will hurt American schools and communities.

Are the Trump dead-enders going to call Greg Abbott “Hitler” and hang him in effigy now that he’s closed the bars in Texas?
